Peak Dental Services

People have to visit their dentists for all sorts of reasons, but there are a few common procedures that everyone should know. Here are 10 of the most common dental procedures- all of which we can do at Peak Dental.

Oral cancer screening is an examination performed by a dentist or doctor to look for signs of cancer or precancerous conditions in your mouth.

The goal of oral cancer screening is to identify mouth cancer early, when there is a greater chance for a cure.

Most dentists perform an examination of your mouth during a routine dental visit to screen for oral cancer. Some dentists may use additional tests to aid in identifying areas of abnormal cells in your mouth.

Teeth Cleaning

Cleanings are by far the most common reason people visit the dentist. Many dentists recommend a cleaning every six months, and some suggest once a year. Either way, it’s an essential part of oral health. Your toothbrush will never be as efficient as the dentist’s tools to clean your teeth.

An annual or semi-annual visit for cleaning will keep your teeth healthy, shiny, and strong. Plus, a cleaning causes minimal discomfort, so no need to fret!

Teeth Whitening

Like cleaning, whitening is a relatively discomfortless process. Some people are sensitive to the whitening agents used, but it’s a straightforward procedure that most dental offices can do otherwise. At-home teeth whitening kits involve a lot of extra time and effort. You need to buy kits and spend a lot of time.

In dentistry, bleaching is quicker and safer because it is performed by professionals. Dentists often use a special hydrogen peroxide gel and a unique light source to whiten faster.

Extractions

Extractions sound scary and painful. Admittedly, they are not the most pleasant of procedures. However, your dentist will do everything possible to help you feel comfortable. You may need an extraction for any number of reasons.

When you have your tooth pulled, you will be thoroughly numbed. You won’t be able to feel a thing! You may be sore afterward, but extractions are almost always to prevent further pain.

UVeneers

If your teeth are crooked or discolored, your dentist might recommend veneers. These are very popular solutions to common tooth problems. It’s a thin covering placed over the front section of a tooth or set of teeth. They’re mainly used for corrective purposes, but they can be used for whitening, too. The process is simple and painless for most people, and it’s easy for dentists to perform.

Fillings

Cavities are all too common and all too easy to get. For most cavities, a filling is the recommended answer. Acids in food and inside your body can easily break down tooth enamel if overexposed.

Luckily, filling most cavities is a quick procedure. You’ll likely be numbed, which can last a few hours after the filling. It usually takes about an hour to finish, and then it’s good as new! You might feel pressure while they’re working, but it shouldn’t be painful.

Crowns

If your cavity is a little too big for a filling or the top part of your tooth has decayed, a crown is the solution. These are usually two-visit procedures but shouldn’t be overtly painful like the filling. Your dentist will take an impression of your tooth so that a lab can craft a satisfactorily fitted crown to protect damaged or weakened teeth.

The second visit will involve fitting and securing the crown, which is usually fast and painless.

Root Canal

Root canal treatment is the most feared dental procedure of all. Despite this stigma, root canal therapy is a pain-free, quick, and relatively comfortable procedure. In fact, it relieves your pain and can prevent more complicated oral issues down the road.

A root canal is a term used to describe the natural cavity in the center of a tooth. This area contains a soft area called the pulp chamber that houses the nerves. Root canal therapy is necessary if this area becomes irritated or infected due to cavities, trauma, or decay. If left untreated, the infection can cause an abscess, which can lead to swelling of the face and neck and bone loss around the roots of teeth.

The good thing is that you’ll be numbed before it happens, so that you won’t feel any pain, just pressure. Once the procedure is over, you’ll be numb but, hopefully, pain-free since the infection will be gone.

Braces

The goal is to straighten and correct crooked teeth, as straighter teeth are often healthier and easier to care for. Classic braces use metal and other materials to tighten teeth back into place slowly. The procedure to have them put on can leave a little ache, but nothing too extreme.

Bonding

Bonding is another way to repair damaged or chipped teeth. It involves a resin – a sort of plastic – that your dentists tints to match the natural shade of your teeth. It’s less invasive than some other methods, especially for more minor imperfections. Several layers are needed to secure the resin, and a light is used to “dry” each layer. The spot is then polished and cleaned to fit naturally into the tooth. It’s a straightforward procedure but can take a little while.

Dentures

Dentures are usually associated with aging, but many people may need dentures. They are meant to replace teeth in a natural way, and they’re typically removable. Fitting for dentures is very common, and it takes a while. Ultimately, it’s worth having a complete set of working teeth again.
